About CAPS

Mission & History

The Chinese Association of Professionals and Scholars, Australia (CAPS) is a not-for-profit organisation serving Chinese doctoral researchers and scholars in Australia. Founded in 2006 and registered with the Victorian government, CAPS builds a platform on which doctoral researchers and early-career scholars meet one another and senior experts, bridges academic innovation and applied translation, and supports members towards new results in both research and career. It has come to play an increasingly significant part in local research and in China–Australia academic exchange.

What we set out to be

  • A platform for scholars in Australia
  • An information hub for careers, innovation and entrepreneurship

Milestones

  1. 2006

    Founded by a group of Chinese doctoral researchers in Melbourne.

  2. 2007

    The first Research Symposium is held. It becomes the annual flagship event, hosted across universities in Victoria.

  3. 2012

    CAPS is formally registered in Victoria. The 6th symposium is held at the University of Melbourne’s Parkville Campus, with a welcome address by then Deputy Vice-Chancellor Professor Susan Elliott AM.

  4. 2022

    The 14th symposium runs at Monash University Clayton under the theme “Reconnect for a Sustainable Future”, with a companion Suzhou Forum on the China side.

  5. 2024

    The 15th symposium is held at the Crown Conference Centre, Melbourne.

  6. 2026

    Twentieth anniversary. The 16th Research Symposium is held at the University of Melbourne on 16–17 October, themed “Empowering Tomorrow’s Trailblazers”.
